The 40 yard container in Saginaw

The 40 yard is the largest container Quick Drop Saginaw Dumpsters offers, built for high volume with fewer hauls and fewer interruptions. Commercial and industrial construction, full-building renovations or demolitions, large office or retail cleanouts, major home remodels and estate cleanups, roof replacements on large structures, apartment or condo renovations, and storm damage and disaster recovery — that is where it lives. It holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly twelve pickup truck loads.

It is bulky and mixed debris that justifies the 40: wood, drywall, flooring, roofing, pallets, packaging, cardboard, fixtures. Concrete, brick and metal go in within the weight limit, but heavy rubble can pass the allowance long before the box looks full, so for a pile of concrete a smaller dumpster is usually the better plan. The footprint is the same 22 by 8 feet as a 20 or 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew.

Space needed

a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement, gravel or a firm pad, not grass), room for the roll-off truck to maneuver and set it down, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires

Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs

General contractors running large projects, developers managing new builds or demolitions, property managers renovating multi-unit buildings, businesses upgrading or remodeling facilities, and municipal or public works projects — those are the regular 40 yard customers. A few local rules point the same way. In Bridgeport Township, the owner or contractor responsible for construction work has to remove the surplus and refuse building material to an appropriate site (Township Code § 24-27(b)), and the Township may ask for dump tickets on a demolition. Birch Run requires construction sites in the Village to keep construction waste in a container and the site free of litter (Village Code § 93.26). Tittabawassee Township, around Freeland, tells owners to keep remodeling and construction waste in an onsite dumpster until it is removed (§ 54-27(c)).

Demolition comes with its own steps. EGLE wants notice at least ten working days before a regulated demolition or renovation, MIOSHA wants notice 10 days before larger friable asbestos removals, and asbestos never goes in a roll-off. In the City of Saginaw, City trash pickup will not take demolition and building materials or debris from contract work (City Code § 50.06) — that is the roll-off's job. On the road, every load is covered or tied down so nothing drops, sifts, leaks or blows off (MCL 257.720), and every load goes to a licensed Mid Michigan disposal or recycling facility, as Michigan requires of haulers (MCL 324.11527).

Access and placement for a 40 yard

The truck needs room to maneuver, a flat, stable surface such as pavement, gravel or a job-site pad, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it, even on busy or uneven sites. A 40 in a public way is a different question. In the City of Saginaw, using or obstructing a street, alley or right-of-way — including storing materials there — takes a written permit from the City Engineer, the obstruction has to be barricaded as the City Engineer directs under the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the fee doubles if work starts without a permit (City Code § 96.004). The Engineering Division is in the basement of the Public Services building at 1435 S Washington Ave (989-759-1410). M-46, M-13, M-58, M-81 and M-84 inside the city are MDOT right-of-way, and we found no MDOT permit for a private container on a state trunkline, so a 40 never sits there. Elsewhere, St. Charles wants a Village Manager permit with a cash deposit and insurance, barricaded with warning lights at night (Village Code §§ 32-28, 32-29), and Frankenmuth a Department of Public Works permit, a cash deposit and insurance (City Code § 4.26). Each town page says what that town asks for.

Suitability

Is the 40 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 40 yard for

  • Commercial and industrial construction
  • Full-building renovations or demolitions
  • Large office, retail or warehouse cleanouts
  • Major home remodels and estate cleanups
  • Storm damage and disaster recovery

Pick a different size for

  • Heavy-only loads — concrete, dirt and brick go in a smaller box
  • Small jobs (you would pay for unused space)
  • Sites without room for the truck to maneuver
  • Asbestos, oil, paint, propane, fuel or other hazardous waste

Placing a 40 yard container in Saginaw

It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement, gravel or a firm pad, not grass), room for the roll-off truck to maneuver and set it down, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In the City of Saginaw we found no City dumpster permit for a bin on your own property — keep it off the sidewalk and street. Using or obstructing a City street, alley or right-of-way, including storing materials there, takes a written permit from the City Engineer, barricaded as the City Engineer directs under the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the fee doubles if work starts without one (City Code § 96.004). No City page names a dumpster permit as such, so call the Engineering Division at 989-759-1410, or ask us, to confirm which permit applies. The City also bans street parking from 3 to 6 a.m. (§ 72.15). M-46, M-13, M-58, M-81 and M-84 inside the city are state trunklines, and we found no MDOT permit for a private container there, so the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules — Bay City's Encroachment Permit covers placing a dumpster, Midland needs City permission for any use of the street (§ 48-1), Auburn, St. Charles and Frankenmuth want a permit, a cash deposit and insurance, and Essexville keeps its outlawn and driveway apron clear (§ 4.404). Check your HOA too. Driveway protection boards are available on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?

Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 — about 22 by 8 feet — so it can, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 30, or a 20 with swaps, is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.

How do you load a 40 yard?

Usually with a crew. The walls are about eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Load evenly, keep heavy material low, and keep everything level with or below the top rim.

Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?

Within the weight limit, yes — but not as the main load. A 40 typically includes five to six tons, and concrete, dirt or brick reach that at a fraction of the volume. For heavy material a smaller dumpster is usually the better plan.

Do you offer swaps on long jobs?

Yes. When the box is full we swap it for an empty one, and longer projects can set up extensions and swap-out service to keep work moving. Tell us the expected duration and we will quote the whole job.
