Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in St. Charles

Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Council licence — “No person shall conduct any business of or use any vehicle for garbage collection without first being authorized and/or licensed by the village council” (§ 28-33).
  • Street permit — occupying a street, including the lawn extension and sidewalk, needs a Village Manager permit, a cash deposit and liability insurance (§§ 32-19, 32-28).
  • Heavy trucks — trucks over 20 tons gross are barred from Beaver Road and West North Street, except deliveries to property owners on those streets (§§ 36-119, 36-120).
  • Village compost pile — in the village industrial park, residents only, yard waste, grass clippings and leaves from their own property, 8 a.m. until dark, April through November (§ 28-68).
  • Brush — curbside the first full week of each month, April through December (§ 28-69(b)).
  • Village office — 110 W. Spruce St, 989-865-8287.

What comes out of St. Charles properties

Garage clutter in 10s, medium remodels and flooring in 15s, roofing and whole-home clean-outs in 20s, large clean-outs in 30s, and demolition in 40s. The village compost pile is for residents' own yard waste and leaves; brush needs prior approval there (§ 28-69(a)), so bigger brush loads go in a container of their own.

Michigan law keeps these out of landfills (MCL 324.11514): used oil, lead-acid batteries, regulated hazardous waste, low-level radioactive waste, liquid waste and loads with free liquids, sewage, PCBs and medical waste; asbestos only goes to a landfill set up for it; and no more than a small amount of whole tires, used beverage containers or yard waste — leaves, grass, brush and trimmings under 4 feet long and 2 inches across (MCL 324.11506). Keep yard waste separate from construction debris and household trash and tell us when a load is yard waste. Fridges, freezers and air conditioners need the refrigerant removed by a certified technician first, EGLE says, so ask before loading one. No paint, solvents, automotive fluids, propane tanks, fuel containers, batteries, medical waste, asbestos or hazardous chemicals in our containers. Household chemicals aren't banned from landfills, but EGLE says they are not well suited for disposal there. Michigan has haulers remind customers every year what's banned (MCL 324.11527a) — our what can and can't go in a dumpster guide covers it. Saginaw County residents can book the Mid Michigan Waste Authority's free household hazardous waste program, which runs April through September by appointment; the County's Clean Sweep takes agricultural pesticides and mercury by appointment ((989) 758-3685); and the County Mosquito Abatement Commission takes residents' used tires, May through August, 10 per property a year, at 705 N Towerline, Saginaw.

Permits, placement and who may haul in St. Charles

Who may haul — the rule that matters: “No person shall conduct any business of or use any vehicle for garbage collection without first being authorized and/or licensed by the village council” (§ 28-33), with vehicle insurance certificates filed with the clerk before any contract or licence is issued (§ 28-37). Residential rubbish includes demolished building materials (§ 28-1). We're licensed and insured.

In the street: “No person shall place any article, thing or obstruction in any street” (§ 32-20), and a street includes lawn extensions and sidewalks (§ 32-19). Occupying a street with materials or machinery for a building job, or for any other purpose, needs a Village Manager permit, a cash deposit and a liability insurance policy (§ 32-28(a)), and obstructions must be barricaded and railed off and lit at night with approved warning lights (§ 32-29(a)). Driveway placement avoids all of it. You do not need to be home as long as the spot is clear, our drivers use boards and careful placement to protect concrete and asphalt, and please don't move the container once it's down — call us and we'll move it.

Truck routes: trucks over 20 tons gross are barred from Beaver Road and West North Street (§ 36-119), except to deliver to property owners living there (§ 36-120). We plan the route to your address.

Parking: we found no village overnight or winter parking ban. Driveway first.

State highways: M-52 (Saginaw St) runs through St. Charles. MDOT manages the state highway right-of-way, and we found no MDOT permit for setting a private container on it — so beside a state highway the container goes on private property, never in the right-of-way. We check the exact address.

Covered loads: Michigan bars driving a vehicle unless it is loaded so nothing can drop, sift, leak, blow off or escape, and open loads must be covered or secured (MCL 257.720). Keep debris level with or below the top rim — that's what makes the load safe to transport.

Remodel or tear-down: before a regulated demolition or renovation, EGLE wants notice through its MiEnviro Portal at least 10 working days ahead. Privately owned homes of four or fewer units aren't covered by the federal asbestos rule (NESHAP) unless they come down for urban renewal or as part of a public or commercial project; apartment buildings of five or more units are. Removing more than 10 linear feet or 15 square feet of friable asbestos also needs MIOSHA notice 10 days ahead, so asbestos rules may still apply to a house. Asbestos never goes in our containers; tell us if you find any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in St. Charles

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address, what you are clearing — a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard, a job site — what you are tossing, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the right size, so you do not pay for more than you need or run out of space, and you get a flat-rate quote whenever possible that covers delivery, pickup, the rental period and disposal within the weight limit. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on a flat, solid surface rather than the lawn, with protection boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when available. You do not need to be home if the area is clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep it level with or below the top rim and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and other liquids, oil and fuel, chemicals, car batteries, tires, propane tanks and fuel containers, medical waste and asbestos. Electronics go to recycling instead. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or text when it is full — in most cases we can collect your bin within 24 hours. The load is covered or tied down for the road and goes to a licensed Mid Michigan disposal or recycling facility, with concrete, wood and metal recycled whenever possible.

Local answers

Dumpster rental in St. Charles — common questions

Is St. Charles same-day?

Same-day or next-day options when available — it is about 23 minutes from the yard. Call (989) 930-1786 before noon for the best chance.

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in a St. Charles street?

Yes. Occupying a street, lawn extension or sidewalk needs a Village Manager permit, a cash deposit and liability insurance, and the obstruction must be barricaded with warning lights at night (Sec. 32-28 and 32-29). A driveway is simpler.

Who licenses garbage collection in St. Charles?

The village council: no one may run a garbage collection business or vehicle without council authorization or a licence (Sec. 28-33).

Where can I take leaves and grass in St. Charles?

Village residents can use the compost pile in the village industrial park for their own yard waste, grass and leaves, April through November (Sec. 28-68).
