The 20 yard container in Saginaw
When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is often where we end up — it is one of our most requested sizes because it works for nearly every type of project. It handles a whole-home cleanout, a full kitchen or bathroom remodel, a roof, flooring, drywall or siding replacement, an estate or foreclosure cleanout, light demolition, an office or retail remodel or a deck tear-down without being so tall that loading becomes a chore. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads.
It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It fits most Saginaw driveways and job sites, and you can load it over the 4.5-foot sides or through the rear door. For multi-day and multi-phase projects it is usually the most cost-effective box.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires
Renovations, roofs, whole-home cleanouts
Furniture, boxes and household junk from a whole house; drywall, wood, metal, cabinets and tile from a multi-room remodel; shingles and underlayment off a roof; framing, doors and windows from light demolition; fixtures and partitions from an office or retail remodel — these are 20 yard jobs. For a whole-house cleanout, many Saginaw homeowners rent a 20 and work room by room. Most residential roofing jobs fit a 15 or 20, but shingles are heavy, so we confirm the weight limit with you first.
Sort a few things out before you start. Michigan bans used oil, lead-acid car batteries, regulated hazardous waste, PCBs and liquid waste from its landfills, and keeps all but small amounts of whole tires, returnable beverage containers and yard waste out of them too (MCL 324.11514). Fridges, freezers and AC units need their refrigerant removed by a certified technician before disposal. Electronics are not banned from Michigan landfills — the state relies on manufacturer takeback programs — but we ask you to keep them out of the dumpster and recycle them. Tell us what is in the house and we talk through where those go.
What the 20 yard includes
Flat-rate pricing that covers delivery and pickup, disposal within the included three to four tons — about 6,000 to 8,000 pounds — and the standard rental period, typically up to seven days. The price itself depends on the delivery location, the type and weight of the debris and how long you keep it, and you get it as one clear number before delivery, with no hidden fees. Heavier materials such as concrete, tile or roofing reach the weight limit before the dumpster looks full, so plan by weight as well as volume, spread debris evenly, keep it level with or below the top rim, and put heavy material in a smaller box where you can. Driveway protection boards are available on request.
Suitability
Is the 20 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 20 yard for
- Whole-home and estate cleanouts
- Full kitchen or bathroom remodels
- Roofing projects — shingles and underlayment
- Flooring, drywall or siding replacement
- Light demolition and deck or fence tear-downs
Pick a different size for
- Mostly concrete, dirt or tile (a 10 handles the weight better)
- New construction and major demolition — that is a 30 or 40
- Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length plus room for the truck
- Asbestos, paint, oil, propane tanks, chemicals or tires
Placing a 20 yard container in Saginaw
It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), enough room for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, free of low branches and wires. The driveway comes first. In the City of Saginaw we found no City dumpster permit for a bin on your own property — keep it off the sidewalk and street. Using or obstructing a City street, alley or right-of-way, including storing materials there, takes a written permit from the City Engineer, barricaded as the City Engineer directs under the Michigan Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the fee doubles if work starts without one (City Code § 96.004). No City page names a dumpster permit as such, so call the Engineering Division at 989-759-1410, or ask us, to confirm which permit applies. The City also bans street parking from 3 to 6 a.m. (§ 72.15). M-46, M-13, M-58, M-81 and M-84 inside the city are state trunklines, and we found no MDOT permit for a private container there, so the box stays on the property. Other towns have their own rules — Bay City's Encroachment Permit covers placing a dumpster, Midland needs City permission for any use of the street (§ 48-1), Auburn, St. Charles and Frankenmuth want a permit, a cash deposit and insurance, and Essexville keeps its outlawn and driveway apron clear (§ 4.404). Check your HOA too. Driveway protection boards are available on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?
About six. Think of it as a whole house of furniture and junk, or the debris from a multi-room renovation.
Can a 20 yard fit in a Saginaw driveway?
In most — it is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, and the truck needs room to back in and set it down. Put it on the driveway or a paved area rather than the lawn. If there is truly no room on the property, a street placement in the City of Saginaw needs a written permit from the City Engineer first (City Code § 96.004), and no City page names a dumpster permit as such, so we confirm with you which Engineering permit applies before delivery. A driveway spot also stays clear of the City's 3 to 6 a.m. street-parking ban (§ 72.15) and the winter plow. Driveway first.
What is the weight limit on a 20 yard?
Typically three to four tons, depending on the type of debris. Shingles, tile, concrete and dirt are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not.
How long is the rental?
The standard rental period is typically up to seven days, and you can extend at a daily or weekly rate if the job runs on. If it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call or text and we pick it up — in most cases within 24 hours.
Can I get a 20 yard the same day?
Often. We offer same-day and next-day delivery whenever possible, and if you call before noon we can often have a dumpster on site that afternoon. The phone is answered around the clock, but we do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
