What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Saginaw, MI Guide
The 20 yard is one of our most requested sizes. How to choose between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space around Saginaw.

If you have never rented a dumpster, this is the page to read first. It covers the whole process from the phone call to the pickup, with the Saginaw, Saginaw County and Michigan specifics that national guides leave out.

Whether you are renovating a home, replacing a roof, cleaning out an estate or managing a commercial construction site, a roll-off puts all the debris in one place. It keeps work areas clean and organized, cuts the trips to disposal facilities, saves time and labor, and handles large volumes of waste safely. Many property owners underestimate how much debris a project makes, and piles of it create safety hazards, slow down work and raise cleanup costs. In Saginaw it matters more than you might think: City trash pickup does not take stones, bricks, plaster, shingles, lumber, building and demolition materials or concrete, or any material from contract work (City Code § 50.06), cans are capped at 50 pounds (§ 50.05), and the Mid Michigan Waste Authority takes up to two bulk items a week.
The usual jobs: estate cleanouts, garage organization, foreclosure cleanup, moving preparation and spring cleaning; bathroom and kitchen remodels, roofing replacements, flooring upgrades and home additions; and building demolition, new construction, commercial remodeling, office renovations and contractor job sites.
You call (989) 930-1786, tell us about your project and the type of debris, and we recommend the right size and give you a flat-rate quote. Once you confirm, we schedule delivery, often the same day: if you call before noon, we can often have a dumpster on site that afternoon. You load it at your own pace, keeping debris level with or below the top rim. When you are finished, call or text us and we schedule pickup, often for the next business day, and in most cases we can collect your bin within 24 hours. You do not need to be home as long as the area is clear. Please do not move the dumpster once it has been placed; if it needs to move, call us. On a big job we can schedule multiple swaps.
Our yard is at 1201 S Wheeler St, inside the City of Saginaw and Saginaw County according to the US Census geocoder, on a City street on the west side of the river, near M-46 (Gratiot Avenue). Saginaw had 44,202 people at the 2020 Census and Saginaw County 190,124.
Start with the job, then check the weight. A 10 yard, about 12 feet long, suits small cleanouts, bathroom remodels, yard debris and minor roofing. A 15, about 14 feet, suits garage cleanouts, medium remodels, flooring and deck or fence removal. The 20, 30 and 40 are about 22 feet long and get taller: the 20, one of our most requested sizes, for kitchen remodels, roofing and large cleanouts; the 30 for full home renovations, construction debris and demolition; the 40 for commercial projects, large construction and large-scale cleanouts. All are about 8 feet wide. Typical weight limits run from 2–3 tons on a 10 up to 5–6 tons on a 40, depending on the type of debris. The sizing guide has the full table.
Household trash in the City of Saginaw and many nearby communities runs through the Mid Michigan Waste Authority, a public authority formed in 1991 that now has 34 member communities in the greater Saginaw Valley, among them the City of Saginaw, Zilwaukee, Frankenmuth, Merrill, St. Charles and Birch Run. In Saginaw, owners of buildings with four or fewer homes subscribe to City collection (§ 50.02), and that collection leaves out construction and demolition debris and contract work (§ 50.06). The Saginaw County Health Department enforces the County's solid waste ordinance of 1993, and the County is writing its own Materials Management Plan; we found no County hauler licence.
Next door, we found no Bay County solid waste ordinance, and the only public transfer facility, Bay City's, takes no waste from private haulers. In Midland County, the City of Midland Landfill takes only waste generated in Midland County. In Tuscola County, home to Vassar and most of Reese, Tuscola County Recycling in Caro takes recyclables, not trash or construction debris. That is why a roll-off is the usual answer for a remodel, a roof, a move-out or a construction site anywhere around Saginaw.
Driveway first. We found no City of Saginaw dumpster permit for a bin on your own property. A container in a City street, alley or right-of-way needs a written permit from the City Engineer (§ 96.004), barricaded as the City Engineer directs and to the state traffic-control manual, and the fee doubles if work starts without one. No City page names a dumpster permit, so Engineering confirms which permit applies. No vehicle may park on a City street from 3 to 6 a.m. (§ 72.15), and trailers may stay on a street for an hour at most (§ 72.18). On state highways such as M-46, M-13, M-47, M-52, M-57, M-81, M-15, I-75 and I-675, MDOT has no container permit, so we never place there. Bay City's Encroachment Permit covers a dumpster in the right-of-way; Frankenmuth, Auburn and St. Charles want a permit with a deposit and insurance; Essexville keeps the outlawn clear; and Chesaning's zoning lists roll-off containers among commercial vehicles, so we check placement with you before delivery. The permit guide covers every town.
EGLE says Michigan's solid waste regulations do not require a licence, permit or registration from EGLE to haul solid waste, though haulers have rules to meet: licensed disposal sites only (MCL 324.11527(1)), equipment that prevents littering (MCL 324.11528) and a yearly notice to customers of what is banned from landfills (MCL 324.11527a). Some towns add their own: Bay City requires a yearly franchise for anyone hauling construction or demolition debris for clients in the city (§ 86-29), Essexville a City refuse-collector licence (§ 2.710), Tittabawassee Township a township hauling licence (§ 54-88) and St. Charles Village Council authorization or licence (§ 28-33).
Frankenmuth (Ch. 21 § 2.1), Reese (§ 26-22), Vassar (§ 58-32), Zilwaukee (§ 22-19) and Carrollton Township (§ 42-20) reserve collection to the City, Village or Township or its contract hauler, so in those five we check the local rules before booking. The permit guide has the detail. We're licensed & insured.
Michigan's landfill ban list (MCL 324.11514, as amended in 2023) keeps out used oil, lead-acid batteries, low-level radioactive waste, regulated hazardous waste, liquid waste or waste with free liquids, sewage and PCBs, and more than a small amount of beverage containers, whole tires or yard waste. Asbestos waste goes only to a landfill that meets the federal asbestos rules, and medical waste only when decontaminated or packaged as the law requires. Michigan has no landfill ban on electronics; its electronics law is a manufacturer takeback program, though landfills and haulers may still refuse them, so recycling is the better route.
For a roll-off that means yard waste goes as its own load, and car batteries, oil, liquids, tires and hazardous chemicals stay out of the box. Fridges, freezers and AC units need their refrigerant removed by a certified technician, so ask first, and ask about electronics too. Mattresses, furniture, shingles, drywall and wood are not on the state ban list, so a roofing load or a furniture cleanout is fine. Heavy materials such as concrete and shingles should be kept separate from lighter debris. If you are not sure where something belongs, call before you load it. The what-goes-in guide has the detail.
Three state agencies regulate asbestos in Michigan, among them EGLE and MIOSHA. EGLE needs notice through its MiEnviro Portal at least ten working days before a regulated demolition or renovation. Residential buildings with four or fewer units under private ownership are not covered by that federal asbestos rule, but privately owned homes or apartments demolished for urban renewal or as part of a public or commercial project are, and apartment buildings with five or more units are covered. MIOSHA separately needs notice 10 days before any non-emergency abatement of more than 10 linear feet or 15 square feet of friable asbestos-containing material.
Michigan landfills take asbestos waste only if the landfill complies with the federal asbestos disposal rule (MCL 324.11514(2)(h)), and asbestos never goes in our roll-offs. On a demolition in Bridgeport Township, materials the state requires to go to licensed disposal sites must go there, and the Township may ask for dump tickets or other evidence of proper disposal.
A hauler taking solid waste over a public road must deliver it to a licensed disposal area or a licensed or registered transfer facility (MCL 324.11527(1)), and the container and truck must be designed and operated to prevent littering (MCL 324.11528). EGLE's summary of the hauling rules adds that all openings must be closed and covers secured, and that the driver is responsible for using and positioning covers. Michigan law also says no vehicle may be driven or moved on a highway unless it is loaded to prevent its contents dropping, sifting, leaking or blowing off, with open loads covered or fastened (MCL 257.720). That is why debris stays level with or below the top rim.
All waste from our dumpsters goes to licensed Mid Michigan recycling and disposal facilities. We recycle concrete, wood and metal whenever possible to reduce landfill use, and yard waste is kept separate for green waste facilities.
The rules change once you leave Saginaw. Next door are Zilwaukee (pop. 1,534; approx. 9 road miles), Carrollton (a community in Carrollton Township, 5,750; 6), Bridgeport (6,571, in Bridgeport Township; 9) and Freeland (7,630, in Tittabawassee Township; 12). Around Saginaw County are Hemlock (1,408, in Richland Township; 13), Merrill (663; 18), St. Charles (1,992; 16), Chesaning (2,430; 27), Frankenmuth (4,987; 19), Birch Run (1,525; 20), Reese (1,261, mostly in Tuscola County; 17) and Vassar (2,727, Tuscola County; 22). In Bay and Midland counties are Bay City (32,661; 17), Essexville (3,379; 21), Auburn (2,068; 21) and Midland (42,547; 24). Populations are 2020 Census counts and miles are approx. road miles from our yard. See the service area, or the Saginaw page for home.
In: household junk and furniture, construction debris such as wood, drywall, flooring and siding, roofing shingles, metal, plastic, cardboard and packaging, yard waste such as branches, grass and soil as its own load, and concrete, brick or asphalt in limited loads. Out, under Michigan's landfill bans: used oil, car batteries, liquids, regulated hazardous waste, sewage, PCBs, and more than a small amount of whole tires, beverage containers or yard waste mixed with trash. Out of our boxes as well: paints, solvents and automotive fluids, batteries, propane tanks and fuel containers, tires, medical waste, asbestos and hazardous chemicals, and refrigerants. Ask first about electronics and fridges, freezers and AC units. The full guide says what to do with each instead.
Spread materials evenly, break bulky pieces down, keep heavier debris toward the bottom, and keep debris level with or below the top rim for safe transport. Keep the path clear for pickup, and in winter keep the approach plowed. Need more time? Extend your rental for a small daily fee, or call for a swap or an additional bin. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime and do not promise night or Sunday service.
To book, call (989) 930-1786 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Have the address, the material and a rough quantity ready, and call before noon for the best chance of same-day delivery. We accept major credit cards, business checks and electronic payments, and invoices are available for contractors and repeat customers.
